The state has declared criminal records of 34 MLAs which is more than double the last time. In the 2016 assembly elections, 14 candidates with declared criminal records were elected as MLAs which is 20 less than that in the 2021 Assembly Elections. Out of the 34, 28 have serious crime case(s) registered against them.


According to the latest report by Association for Democratic Reforms released on May 5, 27 percent of all the candidates of the 2021 Assembly Elections in Assam have declared criminal cases recorded against them. 22 percent of them are associated with serious crimes. The report clearly indicates the increase in the number of MLAs involved in criminal cases.


The report further highlights the party wise distribution of declared criminal cases of MLAs with criminal cases-


BJP - 9 out of 60 winning MLAs have declared criminal charge(s) against them (15 percent). 7 of them with serious criminal charge(s).


INC - 12 out of 29 winning MLAs have declared criminal charge(s) against them (41 percent). 10 of them with serious criminal charge(s).


AIUDF - 10 out of 16 winning MLAs have declared criminal charge(s) against them (63 percent). 8 of them with serious criminal charge(s).


AGP - 1 out of 9 winning MLAs has declared criminal charge(s) against himself (11 percent), the same is also associated with serious criminal charge(s).


United Peoples Party, Liberal - 1 out of 6 winning MLAs have declared criminal charge(s) against them (17 percent), who is also associated with serious criminal charge(s).


Independent - the only winning independent MLA has declared criminal charge(s), who is also associated with serious criminal charge(s).


It must also be mentioned, 1 of the winning candidates has declared murder related charge(s) (under IPC-302), 5 of the winning candidates have declared attempt-to-murder charge(s) (under IPC-307), and 2 winning candidates have declared charge(s) for violence against women.
