In the pursuance of a Government order issued by Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Elementary/Secondary and Higher Education Department, and in excercise of the powers, conferred under Section 34 of Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli, IAS, on Tuesday, in her capacity as the Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar ordered the closure of all educational institutions (both Government and Non-Government), from pre-primary section to University level along with hostels and coaching institutions for a period of 15 days, upto 12th May, 2021. The notice further stated that online classes must be made available for the students.
It should be mentioned here that the order issued by Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Elementary/Secondary and Higher Education Department, authorized the Deputy Commissioners and Chairman of DDMA to issue the above mentioned closure if the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases, in the last 10 days in a district, crosses the 300 mark. The district of Cachar fulfils the criterion as it has recorded over 450 cases in the said period.
Consequently, Assam University issued a notice, enlisting the guidelines to be followed, in pursuance of the order issued by the Chairperson of DDMA. The notice directed that offline activities of all academic departments of the university and the affiliated colleges of Cachar District, shall remain at halt from 28th April, 2021 to 12th May, 2021. However, online classes have been ordered to continue as notified.
The notice announced the postponement of TDC Odd Semester examinations, that were scheduled to be held during the said period of 5th May, 2021 to 12th May, 2021 until further notice. The university is however yet to take a decision on altering the mode of the TDC odd semester offline examinations. A meeting of the Standing Committee of Academic Council (SCAC) has been called on 3rd May, 2021 for taking a decision on the matter. The B.Ed practical examinations have been suspended till 12th May, 2021 in the district of Cachar.
The administrative and urgent services of the university have been notified to continue. Thus, the administrative wings of the university shall remain open from 11 AM to 3 PM till 12th May, 2021. Visitors to the Univesity Campus are prohibited during the period (28th April, 2021 to 12th May, 2021). All hostels shall remain closed and thus, have been ordered to be vacated as early as possible. The notice mentioned that the boarders should take away all the belongings and hand over the room keys to the warden of the respective hostel.
