The News Core reached out to Kamalesh Chakraborty for an interview. Here are some excerpts from our conversation with him:

What inspired you to start playing music and uploading it on YouTube and Instagram?

Playing music has always been my hobby and I have always been passionate about music. Honestly, I never really imagined that things like this would ever happen to me. Last year, when there was a lockdown I was really bored and so I decided to start my own YouTube channel. I've always wanted to share my music to the world. So, that is how I started playing and uploading music on YouTube and Instagram.

Growing up, how important was music in your life? Was your family supportive of what you've been doing?

Growing up, music has played a very crucial role in my life. I remember, in 2007 my mother sent me to a music academy to learn how to play tabla. I was the student of Pandit Kumar Bose and did my 5th year in Bangiya and 6th year in Lucknow. After that I decided how to play guitar from a teacher but due to examinations I had to discontinue it. But I never gave up, I started learning how to play guitar again all by myself.

And yes, both my mom and dad support me in whatever I am doing right now and I am so grateful to have them in my life.

Tell us about your academic life and how it has influenced you to play music.

Academically I was really not that good in studies as compared to how passionate I was about music. When I was in my 9th grade in Maharishi School I started playing guitar with my friends and I continued it even in my H.S. at Don Bosco School. So, I knew that this is what I really wanted to do in my life and will work harder to be a successful musician one day.

Do you think your hometown Cachar has influenced the kind of music that you make?

Not really because the kind of music that I generally play is not known by many of the people in Cachar but only a few of them know that it is a progressive metal. Moreover, most of the people in Cachar listen to Bollywood music and my taste in music is totally different. Sometimes, in order to gain audiences I had to play guitar based on a bollywood song and after that people really get interested to see your work.

Among all the music that you've recorded and posted on Instagram or YouTube, what's your most favorite one?

Currently, my favorite from my YouTube channel is 'Knight' which is my own composition and the other one is Sinbad The Sailor. And from Instagram my favorite music video that I've posted is the intro of 'Barstool Warrior' by John Petrucci.

Have you ever performed in any live shows? If yes, what's your favorite venue?

Yes, I did perform in many live shows in venues like Rajiv Bhawan, Bhanga Bhawan and even at District Sport Association's (DSA) ground. I have a band too and the last time that I performed with them was in 'Karwaan', an open mic held in Silchar.

Among all these venues my favorite venue would be Bhanga Bhawan because of its good music system.

Do you have any other musical skills other than playing guitar?

Well, I can play all types of alters and I'm currently playing keyboards too. And as I mentioned earlier I can play the tabla as well.

Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

Definitely John Petrucci from Dream Theatre. I have learned a lot from him and I really inspire his personality. I really like his potential and the way he plays his guitar. He is very methodical in his practice habits and his style of playing is far more structured than any other guitarist that I have seen so far.

If you could collaborate with any musician or guitarist, who would you pick?

I would like to collaborate again with my teacher Swapnanil Bhattacharjee, who has taught me many things about playing the guitar. And I can't wait for the pandemic to get over so I can collaborate with my bandmates in live shows instead of performing virtually.
