Vocal for Local: Invention of Thermo Stable Human Insulin

In times of distress, it is important to step up and do everything we can, to help revive the Indian economy and work towards equipping our businesses with the tools to tide through such circumstances. The best way to do this is by being completely self-reliant and by being "Vocal for Local". Self-reliance, as the new vision for India, is neither exclusionary nor isolationist.

With the pandemic still a wide spread event all over the world, it may be taken into account that not only COVID-19 but other non-communicable diseases are also a threat to human lives. It is noted that diabetes is one of the steadily increasing non-communicable disease, prevalent over the past few decades. Since the initial COVID-19 outbreak in China, much attention has been shifted towards the people with diabetes because of poor prognosis in those with the infection.

European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Germany stated that insulin is highly sensitive to heat. Insulin can lose its effectiveness if its temperature shifts a few degrees.

To break this barrier of cold chain storage, a thermo stable human insulin has been developed by Professor Sandeep Verma of the Department of Chemistry (currently Secretary SERB) and his team at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. The novel insulin for diabetic patients, invented by Prof. Sandeep and his team, improved heat stability to sustain in elevated temperature (up to 65°C). This invention also reduces the time span of fibrillation process, without any non-natural added amino acids. It is noted that the invention can be adopted by pharmaceutical companies for the formulation of human insulin.

With a special focus on the needs of vulnerable populations, the invention of the thermo stable human insulin, that contributes toward the "Atmanirbhar Bharat", by Prof. Sandeep and his team from IIT Kanpur, was a good innovation to improve the health of diabetic patients.
